UMass Lowell Major Athletic Awards

Lester H. Cushing Award - Presented to the outstanding male and female athletes. In 1911, Lester Cushing joined the faculty at Lowell Textile School as a teacher of English, French, German and history. He served as Lowell’s first Athletic Director, and our next awards are presented to this year’s outstanding male and female athletes in memory of his many contributions to the University.

Bob Griffin Academic Cup - Presented to the UMass Lowell teams that achieved the highest overall team grade point average. Bob Griffin was a respected professor of English, a loyal fan of many of our sports teams, and he had a considerable impact on student-athletes both in the classroom and around campus. Professor Griffin passed away 1997, just days after speaking with our top students during the National Student-Athlete Day Luncheon.

Student-Athlete Award - Presented to the student-athlete on each team who best demonstrates the proper balance of academics and athletics. The recipient must have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the previous semester or an overall GPA of 2.5, and be a varsity letterwinner.
