(1986) - The University of Lowell's first NCAA Division II gymnastic champion, John Alberghini is the second member of his sport to be elected to the Hall of Fame.
A two-time New England champion (1978 and 1980) on the parallel bars and New England champion on long horse (1978) and pommel horse (1980), John won the 1979 NCAA Division II parallel bars title and earned All-American honors. He was invited to compete in the NCAA Division I Championships where he placed 19th among 57 competitors.
The co-recipient of the Lester A. Cushing Award as the school's outstanding male athlete in 1980 (with hockey standout Brian Doyle, a 1985 inductee to the Hall of Fame), John set then school records in parallel bars (9.25), vaulting (9.55) and all around (50.25) during his career. His senior year, he led the Chiefs to their first New England team championship and was co-captain of the team.
A four-year letterman for internationally recognized coach Dick Aronson, John competed in three NCAA championships. In addition to championship performance in 1979, he placed eighth on the parallel bars in 1978 as a sophomore. At the beginning of his senior year, he competed in the New England Cup competition against 1976 Olympic bronze medalist Peter Kormann and then top ten junior gymnast and 1984 gold medalist Tim Daggett.
